Clarinetist named acting coordinator of music

Malena McLaren has been named acting coordinator of music at Northwestern State University. McLaren will oversee programs within the Department of Music, which is part of the Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts at Northwestern State.

McLaren, an associate professor of clarinet, has been a member of Northwestern State’s faculty for 10 years. She held the Joanna Magale Endowed Professorship in 2011-12 and the Clifton A. Alford Endowed Professorship in 2012-13.

McLaren has taught classes in applied clarinet, clarinet choir, clarinet quartets, woodwind quintet, woodwind methods, clarinet pedagogy and clarinet performance literature. She has also taught music history aural skills, theory and remedial theory.

A graduate of the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music in Performance, McLaren earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance at the University of North Texas.

She has recorded with the University of New Mexico Chamber Orchestra, the University of North Texas Wind Symphony and has performed in Mexico, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Victoria, British Columbia.

She has been published in the scholarly journal, the Clarinet and has performed at the International Clarinet Association’s annual ClarinetFest in 2008, 2011 and 2012. She received second prize at the 2007 ClarinetFest in the Research Presentation Competition.
