Voting concluded Saturday night in the third of eight opening-round “matchups” of 16 top accomplishments from the recently completed NSU sports year.
The fourth pairing in Round 1 will be settled Tuesday at midnight, with voters picking their favorite feat between the return of the Chief Caddo trophy to NSU behind the best record since 2008 or the record-breaking season for freshman quarterback Zach Adkins including accolades for Adkins and defensive end JeMarcus Marshall.
The NSU volleyball team seized solid fan voting on both NSUDemons.com and on Twitter defeating football’s 3-1 November surge with 70 percent of the votes to advance to the Demon Delights quarterfinals.
The program captured a 21-12 record, including a 15-3 conference mark, its best season at the FCS level.
During the historic campaign, the squad advanced to its first-ever Southland Conference championship game falling just three points short of the title.
In the opening Round 1 vote, fans gave point guard Janelle Perez's game-winning layup sparking a run to the Southland Conference Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth for the Lady Demon basketball team, a slight nod over the NSU softball team's successful defense of its Southland Tournament crown and second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
In the second matchup, NSU baseball’s Southland Conference record for the biggest one-season turnaround of 14 more league wins edged out the 20-win campaign and league title for women’s tennis.
Sixteen top feats, dubbed "Demon Delights," have been chosen and paired in eight "first-round" voting matchups.
In each, fans will have two days to choose their favorite, advancing it to the quarterfinals, then semifinal rounds, with winners selected in a 24-hour span.
The finalists will be open for voting for two days with the "2013-14 Demon Delight of the Year" selected on Aug. 3, just before the NSU football team holds its first practice in preseason camp under second-year coach Jay Thomas.
