Northwestern State head coach Lane Burroughs and his staff announced the signing of Bret Underwood from Faulkner State Community College (Ala.) as the final addition to the 2014 baseball team.

“We are excited to bring our 2013 class to a close.  It has been a solid year of grinding and working hard,” said Burroughs.  “Our staff, in particular Coach (Chris) Curry and Coach (Andy) Morgan, spent countless hours on the road, phone and at ballparks to put this class together.

“Bringing in 26 new players requires hard work, dedication and sacrifice, and I appreciate the effort of our staff and families.  We believe this class will play a huge role in getting Northwestern State back on top of the Southland Conference,” he said.  To get the young men we did at this stage is a great way to close the book on 2013.”

Underwood, a native of Mobile, Ala., helped Faulkner State to a 41-11 record, which earned them a top 10 ranking among junior colleges.  He finished his career with a .332 batting average, including a .346 average his freshman year.

The 6-2, switch-hitting outfielder had five homers and 36 runs batted in his first season on his way to a first-team all-region and second-team all-state honors.

At Baker High School he led the team deep into the playoffs in both of the years he was on the varsity squad.

“Bret is physical and athletic.  In today's game you better bring some strength and athletic ability to the park and Bret does both,” said Burroughs.  “He's a switch-hitter and a plus-defender in center field.  He comes from a very good area for baseball in Mobile and played for Coach Larker at Faulkner and will no doubt be prepared to compete at this level.”

Underwood hit .468 his senior year with 13 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 31 RBI and 11 stolen bases.  He was voted Defensive Player of the Year in both of the seasons he lettered.

“To get a guy of his skill set and maturity at this point in recruiting is an absolute steal,” said Burroughs.  “We feel great about the young men that will represent NSU baseball and Demons everywhere on and off the field in a first class manner.”

He is the son of Ann and Andy Underwood and has one brother, Drew.  His father was a member of the Ole Miss baseball team from 1980-83.

He will major in business administration and has aspirations of working in at the executive level for a Major League Baseball franchise.
