An exhibition by Northwestern State University Assistant Professor of Design Larrie King opens Saturday, March 3, at the Arna Bontemps African American Museum and Cultural Arts Center at 1327 Third Street in Alexandria. An opening reception for the exhibition, “Birtrude in the Woods,” is Saturday at 6 p.m. Admission to the opening reception is free and open to the public.

King said he is an artist who finds excitement along the blurred lines of fine art and graphic design.

“Through dedication to my craft and infallible optimism I intend to explore new levels of life, both personally and artistically,” said King. ‘“Birtrude In The Woods’ features some of my most personal work to date. It addresses issues of my familial history, my perspective of life in central Louisiana, and the difficulties I faced growing up emotionally separated from my family.

In the exhibit, King mixes his collage and mixed-media work with realistic depictions of birds, fruit, and other objects. He said he is greatly inspired by artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Anselm Kiefer and Barkley Hendricks.

“Birtrude in the Woods” will be on display at the Arna Bontemps African American Museum and Cultural Arts Center until the end of March.
