NATCHITOCHES – For the third consecutive game and Kylie Roos' second straight outing, the Northwestern State softball team held an opponent to just one hit as it blanked Louisiana Tech, 3-0 Tuesday night in a non-conference game at the Lady Demon Diamond Complex.

Roos (6-10) recorded her third complete-game shutout of the season by striking out eight and walking none for NSU (16-23, 4-8 SLC). A single by Meg Knowles in the second inning was all LTU (18-20, 5-3 WAC) could muster.

“Kylie looked very crisp tonight. She carried a lot of confidence in from her last outing against Stephen F. Austin over the weekend. She was in control of the zone, worked ahead in the counts, hit her spots and set the tempo for the entire game,” said head coach Donald Pickett.

The Lady Demon pitching staff has pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings, and Roos has been on the mound for 14 of those frames.

“It's hard for opponents to score when we hold them to just one hit a game. It also takes a lot of pressure off our hitters to score every inning,” Pickett said.

A pair of home runs in the second inning was all NSU would need at the plate. The frame started with a crushing double to the left center gap by Samantha Roberts. Next up, Brianna Rodriguez smashed a two-run shot into the Outfield Club in leftfield to put NSU ahead, 2-0.

Later in the inning, Cassandra Barefield hit a towering fly ball down the leftfield line that snuck inside the foul pole for a home run to build the lead to 3-0. It marked the second consecutive home run game for Barefield.

“We were able to bunch together a few big hits, and that's what it takes to win especially when we're playing good defense and pitching really well,” Pickett said.

Blair Beard knocked a double to left center in the sixth inning, as all four Lady Demon hits went for extra-bases. The double by Roberts extended her hitting streak to eight games.

Erin Kipp (5-5) took the loss for LTU as she allowed three runs on four hits in six innings with no walks or strikeouts.

The Lady Demons will look to keep the momentum going over the weekend with a two game series at Texas-Arlington. Game one will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and the second will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
