The Northwestern State Lady Demons easily took care of the Jackson State Lady Tigers 71-52 at Prather Coliseum Dec. 2.

Senior forward Trudy Armstead led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds as she recorded her second straight 20-point game.

NSU (4-2) was in control throughout the game and did not relinquish the lead once thanks to great shot defense.

“We started the game as well as we could on the defensive end,” Northwestern State co-head coach Brooke Stoehr said. “I was really proud of our focus and intensity. We played great position team defense. ”

The Lady Demons quickly set the pace and scored the game’s first 10 points before the Lady Tigers could even respond.

Jackson State (1-6) had a dreadful first half, shooting 26.7 percent from the field and having none of its starters score.

As a result, NSU’s lead reached as high as 21 points and it led 36-18 at halftime.

The Lady Tigers opened the second half on a roll by taking advantage of five Northwestern State missed shots and going on a 10-0 run.

With an 18-point lead whittled down to a 36-28 advantage with 16:08 left in the game, there was slight concern for NSU.

“For whatever reason, we started the second half not with the same intensity and got a little sloppy. Some of that’s a young team learning how to play after having a little success, not quite able to keep a foot on the pedal and continuing to push. Hopefully we’ll have some great teaching moments from tonight.”

The Lady Demons would respond with a jumper by Beatrice Attura to spark a 7-0 run to put them up 43-28 with 14:03 remaining.

NSU would not lead less than double-digits for the rest of the game as the team notched its 699th victory in program history.

The Lady Demons were able to make half of their shots and hold Jackson State to 36.1 percent shooting.

Outside of Armstead, sophomore Keisha Lee tallied 19 points and eight rebounds, while Robin Richardson added 10 points and five rebounds.

NSU will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to face Arkansas Saturday. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m.
