The Northwestern State volleyball team was recognized by Mayor Lee Posey and the Natchitoches City Council on Monday evening for the Lady Demons’ outstanding 2012 season.

The mayor presented the team with a plaque commemorating their record-breaking year.

The Lady Demons (20-13, 12-6), who finished the season tied for third in the Southland Conference, were the most successful volleyball team in NSU history.

The 20 overall wins are the most in the program’s Division I history, as are the 12 conference wins. The third-place finish is the highest yet for NSU in 25 years of Southland Conference competition.

NSU also recorded the longest winning streak in school history (eight matches) and the first winning season since 1987.

Lady Demon co-head coaches Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman were named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coaches of the Year in addition to five athletes receiving post-season accolades from the LSWA and the conference office.

The 2012 squad went undefeated against Louisiana opponents and defeated every SLC opponent, besides Central Arkansas, at least once.

Along with their athletic achievements, the Lady Demons also performed well in the classroom, amassing a cumulative grade point average of 3.47.

NSU volleyball returns to action this spring for a series of exhibition matches.
