NSU Military Science Dept. recognizes cadets for achievements in past semester

Northwestern State University’s Department of Military Sciences honored Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets during a ceremony for the 63rd Demon Battalion April 25.

“We are here to recognize cadets for outstanding achievements over the past semester,” said Cadet Battalion Adjutant Chelsey Berlin of Lake Charles, mistress of ceremonies. Lt. Col. William Macky Underwood, department head; Master Sgt. Joshua Carswell, senior military instructor, and Cadet Battalion Commander Terrell Murdock of New Orleans presented the awards.

MS-IV (fourth level) cadets were honored and their awards were Cadet Berlin, Military Order of the World Wars Leadership Award for Excellence in Leadership, Recruiting Award; Cadet Bradley Hubbs of Wahiawa, Hi., Cadet Scholar, Platinum Medal Athlete, Superior Cadet Decoration, USAA Spirit Award for cadet who best exemplifies the concept of service to their unit; Cadet Brittany Jeanice of Mannheim Germany, Dean’s List, Silver Medal Athlete, Ranger Challenge Team, Recruiting Award, Battalion Commanders Leadership Excellence Award; Cadet Fulton Johnson of Persburg, Va., American Veterans of World War II Award for diligence in the discharge of duty and willingness to serve both God and Country, and Cadet Hannah Marze of Pineville, Dean’s List, Silver Medal Athlete, Recruiting Award, Military Order of the Purple Heart Award for demonstrating outstanding leadership abilities; Cadet Martina Moore of Opelousas, Dean’s List, Gold Medal Athlete, Drill Team, Daughters of the American Revolution Award for demonstrated qualities of loyalty, patriotism, dependability, good character and adherence to military discipline; Murdock, Cadet Scholars Award, Bronze Medal Athlete, Ranger Challenge Team, Association of the United States Army Military History Award for excellence in military history and the Demon Battalion Sabre, presented in recognition for service as Cadet Battalion Commander; Cadet William Tenney of Shreveport, Dean’s List, Platinum Medal Athlete, Ranger Challenge Award, Veterans of Foreign Ward Award presented for good standing academically and militarily and the George C. Marshall ROTC Award as the most outstanding MS-IV with demonstrated leadership and scholastic qualities that epitomize George C. Marshall;

Marze was also the recipient of the 2013 recipient of the Col. Tom Baker Awards, presented to the outstanding senior cadet who exhibits exemplary traits of dedication and leadership. Her name will be permanently inscribed on the Col. Tom Baker Award Plaque displayed in the Demon Battalion Day Room. Ret. Lt. Col. Truman Maynard presented the award.

MS-III cadets and their honors were Cadet Erica Anderson of Shreveport, Cadet Scholar; Cadet Johnathan Cojocar of Natchitoches, Drill Team Award, American Legion Military Excellence Award for demonstrated general military excellence; Cadet Timothy Chung of Phino Hills, Calif., Cadet Scholar, Ragner Challenge Team, Lions Club Award; Cadet Miguel Garcia of Cheswick, Penn., Dean’s List, Gold Medal Athlete, Ranger Challenge Team, Veterans of Foreign Wars Award and Battalion Commander’s Military Award; Cadet Michelle Higson of Conway, S.C., Dean’s List, Gold Medal Athlete, Recruiting Award, American Legion Scholastic Excellence Award for demonstrated general scholastic excellence and Battalion Commander’s FTX Award; Cadet Henry Odele of Natchitoches, Cadet Scholar Award, Bronze Medal Athlete, Ranger Challenge Team and Military Order of the World Wars Gold Medal Award for excellence in all military and scholastic aspects of the ROTC program; Cadet Kelbry Price of Coushatta, Cadet Scholar Award, Platinum Medal Ahtlete, Drill Team, Military Officers Association of America Award for demonstrated exceptional potential for military leadership; Cadet Angel Salom-Acosta of Fort Polk, Platinum Medal Ahtlete, Ranger Challenge Team, National Sojourners Award for demonstrated ideas of Americanism and a potential for leadership; Cadet Garrett Simmons of Shreveport, Dean’s List, Silver Medal Athlete, Ranger Challenge Team, Association of the United States Army Award for excellence in academics and military leadership, Retired Officers Association Award; Kimberly Taylor of Leesville, Cadet Scholar; Angela Thompson of Southfield, Mich., Dean’s List; Cadet Ebony Vaughn of Texarkana, Texas, Cadet Scholar, Recruiting Award and Scottish Rite/Free Masonry Southern Jurisdiction;

MS-II cadets and their awards are as follows.

Cadet Alexander Capon of Bossier City, Cadet Scholars Award, Ranger Challenge Team, Drill Team, Sgt. York Award, Reserve Officers Association Award for demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership, moral character and a high aptitude for military service; Cadet Harrison Hadel of Baton Rouge, Platinum Medal Athlete Award; Cadet Devorta Pratt of Mansfield, Drill Team, Cadet John Wynn of Natchitoches, Drill Team;
