Dr. Dana Clawson is dean of the College of Nursing and School of Allied Health at Northwestern State University. Her appointment has been approved by the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System. Clawson replaces Dr. Norann Planchock as dean. Clawson has served as interim dean since Sept. 1, 2013.

Northwestern State President Dr. Randall J. Webb said Clawson played a major role in the development of the university’s new Doctor of Nursing Practice program and will oversee its implementation.

“Dr. Clawson has an in-depth knowledge of professional nursing on the regional and national scenes and the means by which the College of Nursing and School of Allied Health will fulfill its mission now and in the future,” said Northwestern State President Dr. Randall J. Webb.  “She has a strong vision for the future of Northwestern State’s nationally-recognized nursing programs and possesses the leadership talent and professional respect that will enable her and her faculty and staff continue to achieve success and prominence for Northwestern State nursing now and in the future.”

Clawson is a Northwestern State alumna, earning an associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing. She received a Doctor of Nursing Science degree from Louisiana State University.

“I am honored to lead Northwestern State’s College of Nursing and School of Allied Health through the ever-evolving healthcare environment and to partner healthcare education with the healthcare community and workforce to make needed changes for Louisiana citizens,” said Clawson.  “I believe Northwestern State has some of the best faculty, students, and staff of any university in Louisiana. I look forward to working with them to build upon the past achievements of the College of Nursing and School of Allied Health.”

Clawson has been a member of Northwestern State’s nursing faculty since 2000. She has served as an associate professor of undergraduate and graduate nursing, coordinator of the women’s health nurse practitioner program and director of graduate studies and research in nursing.

As a member of the faculty, Clawson has contributed to professional journals and written for area publications on women’s health. She has made numerous presentations to professional groups and been part of teams conducting published research. Clawson has obtained more than $1 million in grants to assist the College of Nursing and School of Allied Health.

Clawson was a full-time nurse for 10 years at Minden Medical Center, Willis-Knighton Medical Center and Christus Schumpert Health System.

She donates her time to work as a women’s health nurse practitioner for local non-profit agencies.
