Eight Division I universities reached 2013 NCAA Tournament competition in men's basketball, softball and women's tennis. Northwestern State is the only FCS member in the group, which includes powerhouse programs from coast to coast.
The other seven: California, Michigan, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, San Diego State and UCLA.
"It is truly a blessing for the NSU athletic program to have been the beneficiary of such a good stretch of success," said NSU director of athletics Greg Burke. "Kudos to the student-athletes and coaches who were the central figures in these success stories and at the same time, many others - athletic department support staff, other NSU student-athletes and coaches, university faculty and staff, and community members and alumni - all deserve credit for their support and encouragement."
The Demons' basketball team tipped off the postseason run in March, winning the Southland Conference Tournament title and finishing with a 23-9 record after falling to Southeastern Conference champion Florida in the Austin Regional.
On the last weekend in April, the Lady Demon tennis team swept through to claim the Southland Tournament crown. The NSU women were beaten by No. 9 Alabama in the NCAA field and finished with a 14-8 record.
May 10, the Lady Demon softball team captured the Southland Tournament championship on its homefield and earned an NCAA Tournament berth at Baton Rouge, where nationally-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette edged NSU on the way to the regional championship.
