“One of the most exciting days a new student and their family will have as they prepare for the first semester in college is Move-In Day,” said Reatha Cox, executive director of First Year Experience and Leadership Development at NSU. “As our new students face the daunting task of packing, re-packing, loading the car, driving to Natchitoches, unloading the car, climbing the stairs and setting up house in the residence hall, our volunteers make that process much easier.”
Move-In Day provides an opportunity for new students to make community connections. Civic groups, service organizations, churches, financial institutions, restaurants and area business are encouraged to participate.
“This is your first opportunity to meet students and their families, share information on services and resources, and of course, lend a hand in the move-in process. We encourage you to pass out water, popsicles, energy snacks and information about the services your group provides,” Cox said. “While our new students fear the task of packing, the crowds, roommate encounters, and leaving home, we can make their first day in Natchitoches a great one.”
Volunteers are encouraged to wear Northwestern t-shirts, host a welcome tent or volunteer as a member of the Move-In crew.
Available shifts are 8 a.m.-10 a.m., 10 a.m.-noon and noon-2 p.m. Volunteers are asked to report to the Move-In Headquarters tent at Iberville Dining Hall. From there, they will be shuttled to assigned residence halls, including University Columns, University Place I, University Place II or Varnado Hall. Volunteer parking will be available in the lower Sabine lot. Volunteers are especially needed for the noon-2 p.m. shift.
Welcome committee volunteers will be stationed on University Parkway and at the Northwestern State gates with signs to welcome new students. In addition to the Welcome Tent, Move-In Day will include a welcome packet or each student, music, a sibling welcome with face painting, water and drink stations and photos with Vic the Demon.
Offices in the Student Services Center that will be open to offer assistance on Move-In Day include University Recruiting, Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, One-Card and Student Accounting and Cashiers. University Police will be available on the first floor lobby or host a tent at Iberville to distribute parking permits. The Bookstore will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Northwestern State’s fall semester begins Aug. 26.
