The Shreveport-Byrd product, a three-year starter for the Demons, set a school record with his 12 consecutive made field goals ending the season.
He was perfect in Southland Conference games and earned 2011 All-Southland First-Team accolades, along with recognition as a first-team Preseason All-SLC pick for 2012 just announced Tuesday.
Carrying a 3.6 grade point average in biology,Shaughnessy earned recognition on the 2011 Academic All-Southland Team and the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District 6 first-team elected from nominees representing Division I football teams in Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Michigan North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
He received Beyond Sports Network FCS All-America Team honorable mention in 2011 as his 14 makes included a long of 45 yards. Shaughnessy was a perfect four-for-four on kicks between 40-49 yards, including a 42-yarder at LSU that gave the Demons their first points in 11 meetings with the Tigers, and went three-for-three on attempts between 30-39 yards.
His impact with accurately-placed and arching kickoffs was significant as the Demons ranked second in the Southland last season with an average return of just 19.9 yards, with Shaughnessy contributing an average boot of 61.3 yards and a pair of touchbacks.
Shaughnessy has a career 26 of 41 rate on field goals with a long of 50 as a sophomore at Texas State, and he is 64-70 on conversion kicks.
He plans to become an ophthalmologist. Shaughnessy, who turned down an offer from the U.S. Military Academy to attend Northwestern, is a two-year Demon Deacon, part of the team’s leadership council.
