Northwestern State University’s graduate program in nursing has maintained its position in the top 100 in the U.S. in the latest rankings by U.S. News Media Group.

As part of the U.S. News & World Report 2013 Best Graduate Schools rankings, master’s degree programs in nursing were assessed based on a peer survey of deans, other administrators and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline. A total of 449 master’s degree programs at public and private colleges and universities were ranked. Northwestern State’s program was the highest ranked in Louisiana.

“The Northwestern State graduate nursing program’s ranking in the top 100 in the nation, is a reflection of the excellent curricular offerings, faculty, students and administrative support that come together to produce such outstanding outcomes,” said Dr. Norann Planchock, dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health at NSU. “We are honored to be ranked along with the leading graduate nursing programs in the country.”

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program provides learning opportunities for registered nurses to build upon baccalaureate nursing education, as well as experiential professional knowledge, attitudes and skills. The program prepares registered nurses to function and excel in various advanced nursing roles such as clinical nurse specialist, nurse educator, nurse administrator or nurse practitioner.

“All of Northwestern State’s educational offerings are first-rate, and we are pleased that a high-visibility program like nursing is repeatedly recognized for excellence on the national scene,” said Northwestern State President Dr. Randall J. Webb. “In an era in which health care demands will require even larger numbers of professional nurses with advanced educational preparation—particularly those licensed as nurse practitioners—the entire Northwestern State family can take tremendous pride in this latest honor bestowed on our graduate nursing program. When nursing at Northwestern State achieves these kinds of distinction now and in the future, the result is to add value to our nursing degrees at all levels for our graduates, enrolled students and students of tomorrow.”
