Tribal Fusion belly dancing is coming to Natchitoches.  A 6-week course is being offered through Northwestern State University’s continuing education department beginning Feb. 21 and running through March 28.  Each class will be on Thursday nights, 6- 7:15 p.m. at the Health and Human Performance dance room. The cost is $65.

The classes are intended for those with little or no dance experience.  Comfortable yoga type pants and a tank top/t shirt are all that are needed.  Dancing is usually barefoot in the studio.

The instructor is Cheryl Gianforte, who is a member of the Port Belly Project and Lotus Studio in Shreveport.  Gianforte explains,  ‘Tribal fusion belly dancing is not what most people think when they think of belly dancing.  Tribal fusion comes from the fact that we dance as a group (tribal) and we incorporate many different styles of dance (fusion).”

She also states that Hollywood has presented an image of the typical Cabaret style of dancing and that is not what tribal fusion does. Not only are the dance moves vastly different, but the performing costuming is different as well. It is ethnic and organic, rather than glitzy.

Tribal fusion costuming features layers, large pantaloons, big skirts, and ethnic jewelry, as well as hip flairs.  Flowers are often used in the hair.  Class members are not required to bare their midsections if they choose.

The course will begin with the presentation of the basic steps and these will be incorporated into a simple choreographed dance.  Students will also learn how to use improvisational cues to dance the true tribal style.

“If you’d like to get a good workout and have fun at the same time,  give this a try,” says Gianforte.

Interested students can call 357-5682 or email Melanie Bedgood at bedgoodm@nsula.edu. Call Gianforte at 352-6068 with specific questions about the class.
