The Student Nurses Association at Northwestern State University’s Leesville-Fort Polk campus recently held a food drive to benefit area school children.

Nursing 1050, 1100 and 2500 students collected over 2,400 food items that were packed into 67 backpacks and, through a backpack ministry at First Baptist Church DeRidder, distributed to children who would not otherwise have had enough to eat over a long weekend in Beauregard Parish.

“One of the students got her husband’s troop involved and they collected food items to contribute to this event,” Hickman said.  “We collected so much food there are leftover items for the November Thanksgiving backpacking event. All parties involved in the backpack ministry were so pleased with what the students had done to support this worthwhile project, said Deborah Hickman, assistant professor of nursing.

The SNA’s October project is collecting socks to distribute to a nursing home the students visit each fall.
