Name: Alysia L. Jones

Title: Administrative Assistant III

Years at NSU: 9

Job description: I assist faculty/staff and students with their needs as they pertain to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP). ORSP offers faculty assistance in identifying funding opportunities and in developing grant applications for submission to external funding agencies. My duties include, but are not limited to, greeting visitors, responding to telephone, in-person and email correspondence, maintaining electronic databases, routing agreements, invoices and contracts through the signature process, planning travel arrangements and compiling newsletter data. Along with daily clerical and operational tasks, I collaborate with the Director to ensure that pre- and post-award projects comply with state and national guidelines and to encourage faculty development opportunities through workshops, webinars and promotional materials. I am also responsible for the receiving, distributing and recordkeeping of Human Subjects Institutional Review Board proposals submitted under the purview of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and serving as a non-voting committee member.

Why I like working at Northwestern State: NSU has granted me the opportunity to work with a knowledgeable and commendable group of individuals across academic disciplines who have supported me academically, professionally and personally. As a result, I have continued my educational training and am now a recent recipient of two bachelor’s degrees from NSU. With the knowledge and skills obtained from coursework and hands-on experience, I can confidently perform my duties and responsibilities of supporting faculty/staff with the management of grants and contracts. Although we may not provide many student-related services in ORSP, I feel that we indirectly contribute to the students’ overall experience by encouraging faculty/staff to seek external funding to enhance their teaching and learning environments.
