Entrants wrote on the subject “How The Arts Inspire Me.” All of the winners will receive a cash prize in honor of their accomplishment as well as a $200 per semester scholarship to Northwestern State University with a value up to $1,600 for 4 years. The essay contest is open to all Louisiana students in grades 9 – 12 regardless of type of school institution, including students in all types of private educational environments, as well as home schooled students.
“There were so many excellent essays submitted to this year’s Essay Contest that it was a very difficult process to decide upon just three winners,” said Dr. Shane Rasmussen, director of the Louisiana Folklife Center and co-chair of the Contest. “The winning essays beautifully express not only the importance of the arts in Louisiana, but also how vibrant and intense the experience of the arts can be for our young people. In Louisiana the arts change lives.”
Contest winners have been invited to attend the Fourth Annual Louisiana Studies Conference on Saturday, Sept. 22 to read their essays to the conference participants prior to having their essays published in the Louisiana Folklife Journal which is published by the Louisiana Folklife Center. The Louisiana Studies Conference will be held on the Natchitoches campus of Northwestern State University. This year’s Conference theme is “Louisiana Art and Artists.” Attendance at the conference is free and open to the public.
The contest was sponsored by the Louisiana Folklife Center, the Folklife Society of Louisiana, the NSU Department of Fine and Graphic Arts, the NSU Office of the Provost, the NSU Writing Project and the Northwestern State University College of Arts, Letters, Graduate Studies and Research. The Contest is annual, with a new theme to be announced in early Spring 2013.
