Reading on the River, a free literary event held Nov. 10, encouraged kids to delve into a world of the written word. Service League members put in at least two hours of volunteer time coordinating and assisting activities. A recap of the event in numbers follows: 252 children came. 95 parents were interviewed. 3200 bookmarks were distributed through schools and childcare centers. 500 books were given away. Six authors and illustrators shared their personal stories and encouraged children to write. 16 different literacy lessons were taught. 112 parent education brochures distributed. Over 1,000 books collected through churches, businesses and schools. Pictured from left are Service League treasurer Dawna DeBlieux, Service League member Sheila Warner and Service League secretary Debra Jo Hailey. They are carting donated books to the book hospital to be cleaned and sorted.
