The Natchitoches Parish Veterans and Memorial Park Committee met Thursday to finalize plans for the Veterans Day program. Preceding the meeting, committee members recognized those who donated toward park construction. Former Lt. John Dale Thornton bought a bench in memory of his two late brothers, Donald R. Thornton and Charles Dale Thornton. All three Thornton brothers served in the Marine Corps. Thornton was also recognized as a Gold Sponsor for the park. The St. Denis chapter of the DAR decorated a patriotic tree and patriotic wall located at the downtown City Bank lobby. The tree has 200-300 stars with veterans’ names, color-coded according to their military status. Red symbolized active veterans, white deceases veterans and blue living veterans. There is also a plaque commemorating those in the armed forces who have died in the past year. The Veterans Day tree will be displayed until Tuesday, Nov. 13. Middle School religion classes at St. Mary’s Catholic School have been participating in community service activities this year. Students go off campus each month to give a service back to the community. During October, eighth graders visited The Courtyard to play bingo with residents, visit rooms, sing and assisted with moving residents around the facility. Health care providers participated in the Natchitoches Parish Council on Aging Health Fair Nov. 5. They provided information about services for seniors, such as Medicare/Medicaid enrollment, Medicare/Medicaid fraud, ombudsman services, elderly abuse, domestic violence, cancer treatment, medical supplies, in-home health, assisted living facilities, veterans administrations services, elderly legal services, mental and physical therapy and hospice services. The following healthcare professionals provided vision, hearing, blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, flu shots, hearing phones, smoke detectors and door prizes: Choice and Change, Lincare, Legal Services of North Louisiana, Hospice of Natchitoches, Cenla Area Agency on Aging, New Horizons, Natchitoches Assisted Living, Prism, Shipp, Wal-Mart Pharmacy, Causey’s Pharmacy, Harmony Home Health Care, Natchitoches Fire Department, D.O.V.E.S., Synergy, Natchitoches V. A. Outpatient Center, Community Care, Thompson Home Health, Project Celebration and Woodcrest Home Health.
