Students at Marthaville Jr. High School visited with children’s author Todd Strasser. Tanuiska Worsham’s eighth grade English class spoke with the author via Skype video. The students had just completed Strasser’s novel, “The Wave,” and they asked the author questions about his book and about being a writer. The students were also entertained by Strasser’s questions about “eating alligator” and “mudbogging.” “These are real people, writing from what they know, and they were once just like my students,” Worsham said. “Through this activity, not only can the students become engaged with the story line and the contents of the story, but with the work behind the book. Who wrote this and why is no longer an abstract idea.”

A Union Pacific train hit this vehicle that was parked on the tracks at the La. Hwy. 1 bypass crossing about 4:30 a.m. Friday morning. The driver of the vehicle, Trisha Garlington, told NPD officers she took a wrong turn onto the service road and then drove onto the tracks where the tire stuck and she was unable to drive away. She got out of the car and walked to the Shop-A-Lot station on South Drive. The train struck the vehicle just north of the crossing and knocked it into a corn field and railroad personnel reported the wreck. Lt. Ross Desadier said that night shift B investigated the accident in which no one was injured. He said it is still under investigation.
