Chris Cryer is no stranger to success. In fact, college athletics has become tradition for the Cryer crew. Chris, a senior at St. Mary’s High School, will carry on the Cryer legacy. He verbally committed to play linebacker at Northwestern State and will sign his national letter of intent on National Signing Day in February. He helped the Tigers to a perfect 10-0 mark in his senior campaign before injuries plagued SMH, which finished 11-1 with a second-round exit in the class 1A playoffs. Cryer follows in the footsteps of his oldest sibling, sister Kacie, who played college basketball at LSU-Shreveport. Older brother Cody was a quarterback in high school, but realized that wasn’t his athletic calling. He is now on scholarship at McNeese State as a golfer. His decision to play at Northwestern State was easy, knowing he would be a perfect fit for head coach Bradley Dale Peveto’s system because of his high-octane personality and passion for excellence on and off the field. When asked what led him to be a Demon, he simply replied “Coach Peve,” with a big grin. “He’s a fireball. He likes to win. He’ll do anything it takes to go out of the way to get the best kids to win. That’s how I play. I’ll do anything to win,” Chris said. Chris is right. Peveto’s passion for the game has been promising since he began his tenure as the Demons’ leader. He’s bringing the program back to winning ways. The focus on his 0-11 inaugural season has fizzled after the 5-6 mark NSU posted in 2010 when he had the program one game away from a Southland Conference crown. His resume also includes a National Championship with LSU in 2007 when he was co-defensive coordinator. “Since Peveto won a National Title coaching there and has coached at other places, the knowledge Chris will get of the game will be great,” said Charlie Cryer, Chris’s father and head coach at St. Mary’s. “I like that Peveto demands excellence in the classroom and on the field. He made a good choice and I think Chris did too.” Peveto and Charlie Cryer have developed a close bond away from football, which could create controversy regarding Chris’s commitment. “I didn’t make this decision for him,” Charlie said. “It won’t affect my relationship with Coach Peveto one way or another. Chris has to produce at NSU like he produced for me at St. Mary’s. Our friendship will not determine playing time for him. That’s strictly up to Peveto. I just think it’s great for Chris to continue his football career.” Chris is already preparing to maximize his opportunities at the college level. The senior is setting goals for himself and he doesn’t even have a high school diploma yet. “I have to go to class and make the grades,” he said. “I want to gain weight. I have to support myself and my team, just like in high school, but I have to play with more passion since it’s college. I want to be able to run with the wide receivers and running backs. I’m slow, but I take good angles. That’s what I do. But I want to get faster.” “He’s very athletic and very tough,” Charlie said. “He’s going to have to go in and get in the weight room and work. It’s all football for him now. He’s 6-foot-4 and weighs probably 180 pounds and he needs be 210 or 220. I think once he commits to football, he’ll be able to do that.” The transition from high school to college should be easier than most making the jump. His high school career ended in Turpin Stadium, posting an 11-1 mark in his final two seasons at SMH, which played all home games at NSU’s facility. “It’s comfortable,” Chris said. “People moving to Texas and Alabama and such, I get to play in that stadium for hopefully seven total years. That was a big part of it. I have a lot of support because this town is very supportive. I’m home and I’m comfortable.” Even with the early goals he’s set for himself, Chris has two ultimate goals fueling his fire. “I want a conference championship and a national championship,” Chris said. With the direction Northwestern State football is going, he’ll get that chance.
