When the City named the playing fields in the Maggio-Williams Recreation Complex after the late Joe Sampite, the council recognized the original board members on the Dixie Youth organization. From left are former Mayor Wayne McCullen, Sheila Gill, Lester Lee, Jimmy Berry, Burley Johnson, Charlie Vienne and Robert Woodard. They wore “Champ” shirts to remember Sampite’s favorite word for people in case he didn’t remember their names.

CHAMP #2
Family members of the late Joe Sampite saw a rendering of the entrance to the playing fields at the Maggio Williams Recreation Complex during a ceremony by the City Council to name the fields in Sampite’s memory. Sampite was responsible for beginning a recreation program for the City that resulted in the construction of the complex in East Natchitoches. From left are his son, Chris Sampite, grandchildren Michael and Ryan Sampite and Daphne Sampite; daughter Michaela; grandson John; Margie Pierson add Sue Verhcer. Patrick Hollier designed the entrance gate.
