Demons finish the job in finale against Southeastern

The Northwestern State baseball team did not let one heartbreak become two Sunday afternoon. After watching a ninth-inning lead disappear in the middle game of their Southland Conference opening series against Southeastern, the Demons rode a relentless offensive attack and saw a pair of freshman pitchers grow up in an 118 victory against the Lions at Brown-Stroud Field.

Five Northwestern State athletes garnered a total of seven superlative awards, as the Indoor All-Southland Conference teams were announced Thursday.

The game of inches went against the Northwestern State baseball team Wednesday night. Facing former Southland Conference rival Sam Houston for the first time since 2021, the Demons went pitch-forpitch with the Bearkats before a deflected single gave the hosts a late lead in a 5-2 Sam Houston victory at Don Sanders Stadium.

Northwestern’s annual Roper Memorial Golf tournament April 27

Northwestern State University will host the 42th annual Chris Roper Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday April 27 at Northwestern Hills with a kick-off party Friday, April 26. Proceeds from the tournament are used to fund two scholarships awarded each year to two deserving students who are enrolled in the Health & Human Performance Department.

The Red River Games Special Olympics opened with a torch run for athletes who competed in track and field events, arts, crafts and field day games at Northwestern State University March 19. Athletes from CENLA, East Natchitoches Elementary, Fairview, Goldonna, Lakeview, Marthaville Natchitoches Central, Natchitoches Junior High, Natchitoches Magnet, NSU Middle Lab, Provencal, Red River, Weaver and Natchitoches ARC participated. Special Olympics was presented by NSU First Year Experience and Presidential Leadership Program, University Police and Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Department with contributions from several student groups, BOM Bank and Natchitoches City Police with parents, teachers and volunteers supporting the athletes and cheering them to the finish link. This year’s theme was “Wild About Special Olympics Day.” Opening ceremonies were dedicated to the late Lt. Amanda Fournier, long-time Special Olympics volunteer.

King Kat tournament on the Red River next month

King Kat is coming to Natchitoches to hold one of its 2024 Signature Series Tournaments on the Red River. The tournament is held April 11-13. Public weigh-ins take place Friday, April 12 at Grand Ecore Boat Launch, and the final weigh-in is Saturday, April 13,on the Natchitoches Riverbank.

Energetic Demons attack day one of spring practice

Blaine McCorkle was a happy football coach Monday afternoon – one surrounded by players who shared the same emotion. For the first time since arriving as Northwestern State’s head football coach in November, McCorkle was able to put his team through a practice, running the Demons through a two-hour workout at Turpin Stadium to kick off spring practice.
