HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Britni Martin scored a game-high 24 points on a season-best six 3-point baskets to help lead Sam Houston State to a 80-64 Southland Conference women’s basketball win over Northwestern State here Wednesday night.

The loss was the ninth-straight suffered by NSU (5-21, 1-12 SLC) while the Bearkats (14-10, 9-4) remained at least in a tie for the lead in the league’s West Division.

Jordi James paced NSU with 18 points while Trudy Armstead added 14 points, Jasmine Upchurch 14 and Meredith Graf 11.

In addition to Martin’s 24 points, Sequeena Thomas added 15 points and 17 rebounds while Jasmin Wiley scored 11 and Jasmine Johnson 10.

“They hit a few 3’s and they kept pushing the ball on us and we couldn’t keep up,” said head coach Jennifer Graf. “We did what we could to stay in there but we were just worn down. We would cut the lead but they would push the ball down the floor and hit a three.”

Sam Houston led it 49-35 at the half and built a 59-38 lead before the Lady Demons stormed back on a 15-6 spurt to cut the deficit to 65-53 with 9:25 to play. But the Bearkats rolled off nine straight to go back up by 21 points.

“They have four post players that they can rotate in and out and I knew Trudy and Jasmine would have a hard time keeping up,” said Graf.

Both teams stormed out of the gate in the first 10 minutes of the game and Northwestern State held as much as a three point lead and was up 21-20 at the 10 minute mark when Sam Houston State rolled off an 18-4 run to go up 38-25 with 4:34 to play in the half. The Bearkats scored six straight to make it 28-22, and after a Trudy Armstead jumper cut the deficit to 28-24, Sam strung together a 21-13 rally to take a 49-35 lead into the break.

NSU hit 22 of 65 from the field for 33.8 percent for the game and was just 10 of 33 for 30 percent in the second half. Sam Houston was much better, hitting 52.5 percent (32-61) for the contest and was a remarkable 14 of 23 for 61 percent in the second half. The Bearkats also hit 7 of 11 for 63.6 percent from long range.

The Lady Demons will be back in action on Saturday when they host Texas-Arlington at 2 p.m. in Prather Coliseum.
