HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Victorious in eight of its last nine contests, the Northwestern State softball team will look to stay hot as it opens conference play with doubleheader against Sam Houston State on Saturday.

The teams were originally scheduled to play on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., but due to the heavy chance of rain the teams will play two on Saturday instead. The start time is still to be determined.

The bats have come to life as five Lady Demons (10-13) are posting a batting average of at least .300 on the season, including Tara McKenney who leads the way with a .356 mark. Brianna Rodriguez is hitting .348 and on a nine game hitting streak, while Cassandra Barefield is hitting .349 and on an eight game hitting streak.

In their latest game, the Lady Demons trailed 5-0 to Southern after five innings in the second game of a doubleheader when the bats exploded for eight runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in the sixth, and went on to win 8-6. The Lady Demons cruised past the Jaguars 7-2 in the first game, as Brooke Boening pitched three shutout innings of relief to earn her first save.

Cali Burke has reached base safely in all of the last nine contests and has raised her batting average up to .340 on the season. Blair Beard has also found her swing, hitting at a .300 clip on the year and on a four-game hitting streak.

On the mound, Kelee Grimes leads the staff with a 3.30 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 57.1 innings, while Boening has a 3.58 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 29.1 innings. Kylie Roos is coming off a complete-game performance against Southern, striking out eight batters in seven innings and allowing just two earned runs to get the win.

On defense, the Lady Demons have committed just 21 errors in 23 games which is second-best in the Southland Conference. Beard and Samantha Roberts both boast a 1.000 fielding percentage and have started every game for NSU.
