Northwestern State third baseman Ryan Westbrook has given the Demons their first weekly award winner of the season when he was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Hitter of the Week this week.

Westbrook, a junior from Lufkin, Texas, hit .529 for the week last week in helping lead the Demons to a 3-1 record in four games. He hit safely in all four games – two of those with multiple hits – and had a career-best four base hits and three RBI in a 4-for-5 outing in a 9-3 win at Southern last Wednesday.

He also hit home runs in back-to-back games and had at least one RBI in all four games and multiple RBI in three of the four.

In a three-game weekend Southland Conference series against McNeese State, which the Demons took two out of three for the series win, he hit 5-for-12 with a double, two runs scored and five RBI.

LSU starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was named the state’s pitcher of the week after he fired a career-high 11 strikeouts through eight shutout innings in a 6-0 win over Michigan on Friday night.

The winners are chosen by a vote of sports writers from across Louisiana.
