CONWAY, Ark. – The Northwestern State softball team split a doubleheader with first-place Central Arkansas Tuesday night, 6-1 UCA and 5-3 NSU, at Farris Field. Cassandra Barefield launched a two-run homer and Samantha Roberts cracked a clutch RBI double to put NSU (13-19, 2-4 SLC) on top in the second game. Brianna Rodriguez homered in the first game, but the UCA (25-11, 5-1 SLC) bats were on fire and outhit the Lady Demons 10-5.

After a leadoff single for UCA in the bottom of the seventh in the second game, Kylie Roos came in to relieve Kelee Grimes (6-7), who picked up the win and allowed three runs in six innings.

Roos’ first batter singled to leftfield to set up a first and second, nobody out situation with NSU leading 5-3. The Celina, Texas native then recorded three outs consecutively, including a strikeout to end the game, and picked up her first save of the season.

At the plate, Roos reached base safely in both games to extend her on-base streak to 10. She placed a single up the middle in the first game and ripped a single to leftfield in the night cap. The knocks also extended her hitting streak to six games. Her single in the second game came in the first inning to score Blair Beard and get NSU ahead, 1-0.

After UCA scored in the bottom of the inning, the Lady Demons responded in the next frame with Barefield’s two-run homer to leftfield to lead 3-1. The blast plated Cali Burke, who led-off the inning with a double to leftfield.

UCA again matched it in the bottom half with a two-run homer by Lissa Avitia, who finished the game four-for-four.

In the fifth inning, Roberts came to the dish with runners on first and second with one out and smashed a double to centerfield to get NSU back in front, 4-3. Next up, Burke picked up a RBI to extend the lead to 5-3 on a squeeze play.

Cami Newsome (9-3) suffered the loss for UCA, allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings. Rodriguez’s solo homer to leftfield in the first game came in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. UCA scored three in the second inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Rodriguez also doubled in the seventh frame of the second game to extend her hitting streak to six games.

Brooke Boening (3-3) allowed four earned runs in six innings and struck out four. Kelsie Armstrong (14-7), who leads the SLC in wins, strikeouts and several other categories, pitched a complete-game and struck out 10 to get the win.

Avitia was the star of the series for UCA, as she homered in both games and finished a combined six-for-eight with five-RBI and three runs scored. The Lady Demons will continue their six-game road trip on Friday at Texas-San Antonio at 6 p.m. in the first of a two-game series. The second game will be on Saturday at 2 p.m., and NSU will play a doubleheader at Sam Houston State on Sunday starting at 3.
