Name: Christine Romain Ferrell

Title: French and Spanish instructor, Department of Language and Communications

Education: B.A. in Translation in French–German–Spanish, Institut Supérieur de Traducteurs et Interprètes, Brussels, Belgium; Master of Arts in French, bilingual option with half of coursework in Spanish, University of Louisiana-Lafayette; ABD for Ph.D. in Francophone Studies, University of Louisiana-Lafayette. As part of my Ph.D., I am writing about the Belgian sense of humor in the work of the late Belgian author Jean Muno, who lived near my hometown.

Years at NSU: From January 2008 until August 2010, I worked as adjunct faculty. Since January 2011, I have been working as an instructor.

Job description: I teach introduction and elementary French classes and introduction Spanish classes, both face-to-face and online.

Why I like working at NSU: I work with friends and I love sharing my culture and language, and that of other places I cherish. I feel challenged and enjoy participating in various activities such as Fall/Spring Read, translations, service learning projects, and the like. I love the opportunities that teaching both face-to-face and online have created for me. Teaching both types of classes engages me in enhancing my lesson plans and keeping up with new technologies. I love to help students realize the connections between languages and how much they already know, and see them gain a better understanding and mastery of their own language by studying a foreign language. I love the flexibility of college level teaching that allows me to take students into the community, and in the Natchitoches Parish school system more specifically.
