Lady Demons open season in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS- The Northwestern State women's basketball 2012-13 season tips off at 6 o'clock Friday when the Lady Demons hit the road to take on the University of New Orleans Lady Privateers with new co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr at the helm.

Brooke has 10 years of experience in college basketball serving as an assistant at Texas Tech, Southern Mississippi, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas Little Rock, and Florida State. Scott has experience at Nebraska Wesleyan, North Texas, FSU, UALR, and Louisiana Tech.

This year's team has six returners including Jasmine Bradley who missed most of last season with a knee injury after having a stellar freshman season in 2010-11 and Jasmine Upchurch who was second on the team in rebounds per game (7.9) and third in points with 11.5 a year ago.

Other returners to the team are Tiandra Wiliams, Tashana Triplett, Meredith Graf, and Arianne Ausmer.

The Lady Demons finished the 2011-12 season with a 6-23 overall record with a 2-14 record in Southland Conference play.

Newcomers to this year's team are Janelle Perez, Markeshia Johnson, Breanna Fuller, and Danielle Westerfield.

Perez, a 5-2 guard, averaged 18.4 points per game and 5.2 assists and steals at Horizon High School in El Paso, Tex. her senior season.

The Lady Privateers are coming off a 0-26 season and are in transition back to Division I. The program will join the Southland Conference next season after a brief stint as an independent member.

The two will face off again Feb. 2 to beak up conference play.

NSU will host their home opener Monday when they take on Alcorn State.
