NATCHITOCHES – Forward Jasmine Upchurch scored a career-high 30 points and had 14 rebounds to lead the Northwestern State women's basketball team past Wiley College 65-57 Tuesday night.

It was Upchurch's ninth double-double and the 23rd double-digit scoring effort of her career. She also contributed two steals and one assist.

“The thing I'm most proud of is her six offensive boards aside from the fact that she 30 points,” she said. “She was really big on the offensive glass and gave us a few extra possessions at some critical times. She's capable of that every night and we have to figure out ways to get her the ball more and be creative with that.”

Northwestern State (3-1) is off to its best start since the 2005 season when the Lady Demons won four of their first five. Wiley College dropped to 4-1 on the season.

Freshmen Janelle Perez (13) and Danielle Westerfield (10) each scored in double-figures on the night. Freshman Markeshia Johnson rounded out the scoring leaders with eight on the night.

The Wildcats took the lead early grabbing a six point lead four minutes into the game and had their largest lead of the game at the 7:18 mark, but the Lady Demons fought back and overtook the lead with just under three minutes to play in the first half and never let it go.

“The main thing that we always tell our team is whether you make or miss shots your energy level doesn't change,” said Stoehr. “I felt like we let our missed shots affect our energy on the defensive end and gave up some easy looks we normally wouldn't give up.

NSU's largest run came when the Lady Demons took the lead over going on a 15-3 stretch over a six-minute span.

Jasmine Bradley followed behind Upchurch with nine boards, and Johnson finished with five. Perez led the team with four assists.

Wiley came within two points in the last minutes, but clutch free throws by Perez, Upchurch, and Lee helped seal the win. Six of Perez's points came during that span.

Northwestern State will travel to Houston Friday and Saturday to take part in the UH David Jones Classic starting with Texas-Pan American at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon.
