Name: Lynn Woods, Ph.D.

Title: Professor of Hospitality Management & Tourism

Education: B.S. Business Administration Concentration in Hotel-Restaurant Management, California Polytechnic University, Pomona Calif. M.B.A. University of Virgin Islands, St. Croix, U.S.V.I. Ph.D. University of Southern Mississippi

Years at NSU: 17

Job description: Mentor and teach students pursuing careers in hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, event planning, special events productions, theme parks, national/state parks, country clubs or sports arenas.  Also, take students on study abroad excursions to Europe or adventure destinations such as Peru, Ecuador or Costa Rica.

Why I like working at Northwestern State: I enjoy my students, department head and dean. I like the fact that our program is practical application based.  As such, students have a chance to produce an International Festival every other year, complete with backdrops, food, wine, music and dance.  They also work in the industry for class credit, with groups such as the Chamber of Commerce, Jazz Festival, area wedding planners and the Natchitoches Visitors Bureau.  Also, I like that we travel every year.  In January, we go to the annual Lieutenant Governor’s Tourism Summit and an international excursion is planned each year for the students.  I accompany them in the “even years” to Europe for the HMT 3150 European Studies program.  We just returned this past summer from Austria, Greece and Italy.  In the “odd years” we offer the HMT 4260 Adventures in Cultures and Ecotourism class.  This year we will be traveling to the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, an area that was the inspiration for Darwin’s Origin of Species, and magical Machu Picchu in Peru.
