Northwestern State senior Janae Allen made quite the impact in her first appearance at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Thursday as she posted the second-best discus mark of her career and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Allen placed 11th in the discus with a throw of 163-06. The mark advances her to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Oregon from June 5-8.

“Janae looked really good in the warm-ups,” said Lady Demon head coach Mike Heimerman. “Her first throw of the day was the best so we kind of had to play the waiting game to see if she would make it.

“The smile on her face when she knew she was going to nationals was priceless. She is super excited to go to Eugene and I am ecstatic to see her accomplish this. She has worked very hard to get to this point so it is just a great way to cap off her career at NSU.”

Lady Demon freshman Rechelle Bessard also competed in the discus but did not advance, throwing for 133-04 and placing 44th.
