All Northwestern State football fans are invited to a pre-game tailgate event, which will feature a jambalaya lunch and the Mighty Vic's Kids Club Zone, Saturday afternoon as the Demons kick off the Southland Conference season at in-state rival Nicholls.

Kickoff is 3 p.m. at Guidry Stadium on the Nicholls campus. The Demons' pre-game event will begin at 1 p.m. and will be located beside Lot 17 outside the east stands.

An authentic bayou jambalaya will be served and beverages will be provided along with NSU giveaways and a bounce house for youth.

There is no charge for the event, but attendees are encouraged to make a voluntary donation of any amount to the Demon Victory Fund to help with expenses.

In addition to starting the Southland season for both teams, Saturday's game is the 20th annual "NSU Challenge" as both schools commonly use the acronym NSU in their backyards.

In 1993, student government leaders at both institutions created a wooden trophy that goes to the winning team each fall.

The Demons have won the last two meetings, 27-26 last year at Turpin Stadium and 34-0 in 2011 at Guidry Stadium.

Northwestern's first-year head coach, Jay Thomas, spent 14 years on the football staff at Nicholls, including six (2004-09) as head coach. Associate head coach Chris Boone was at Nicholls in 2002-03.

The Demons have 29 players from south Louisiana whose hometowns are closer to Thibodaux than to Natchitoches.

"It's not about me. It's about the Demons. This game is our conference opener. The real season gets underway Saturday afternoon in Thibodaux and we are calling all Demons to come to Guidry Stadium, enjoy some great fun at tailgating, and then let's get down to business and see who's the Real NSU," said Thomas.

Sporting a 3-2 overall record, the Demons will take the field on Saturday after whipping Langston 37-0 on Sept. 28 and enjoying an open weekend last Saturday. The Colonels are also 3-2, with a 42-22 victory over Langston on Sept. 21 and a 44-34 win two weeks ago over Arkansas Tech.

Nicholls upset Western Michigan and lost to Oregon and Louisiana-Lafayette in its road games.

For more information on the event, please contact Adam Jonson, associate athletic director, at 318-729-7376, or jonsona@nsula.edu via e-mail.
