Laird was named one of the Top 100 Players in Demon Football History during the 2007 Centennial Celebration of NSU football, and was enshrined in the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 due to his remarkable career at Ruston High School, where he is now in his first year as head coach.
An All-State quarterback, Laird came to the Demons and back to Natchitoches as a highly-touted, championship-winning quarterback from Ruston High School. He was the Most Valuable Player in the 1990 Superdome Classic as the Bearcats capped an unbeaten season with the state title, and he ended his career breaking Bert Jones' Ruston High career passing record.
Goodwin had to pull Laird out of his redshirt year as a true freshman in 1991 due to injuries, and it launched a remarkable career. Laird became the Demons' career passing record-holder, throwing for 6,037 yards from 1991-95.
His 1,985 yards in his senior season ranks fourth on the Demons' top 10. He also set a school record with 113 straight passes without an interception as a senior.
His father Billy was the Demons' offensive coordinator from 1975-82 when NSU had explosive offenses featuring stars like Bobby Hebert, Joe Delaney, Petey Perot and Mark Duper.
The younger Laird went into college coaching and spent several years at Northwestern under Goodwin, Scott Stoker and Bradley Dale Peveto. He was also NSU's alumni director for nearly a year in 2012-13 before his high school alma mater came calling.
Laird's college coach, Sam Goodwin, was the Demon Great of the Game at homecoming on Oct. 19.
Dr. William Broussard, a two-time All-America center for Goodwin in 1998 and 1999, was this year's first Demon Great of the Game. Butch Ballard, the All-Louisiana quarterback in 1974, was in the spotlight Sept. 28 against Langston.
The Demon Great of the Game, presented by Exchange Bank and Trust of Natchitoches, spotlights some of the most outstanding performers in the 105-year history of NSU football. Exchange Bank has been a key supporter of NSU Athletics throughout its long history as the oldest financial institution in Natchitoches.
