All-Southland Conference tennis standout Polina Konop, who returns for her senior season this spring after leading Northwestern State to the 2013 NCAA Tournament, joined 19 Demon football players among 50 student-athletes and athletic department personnel receiving degrees Dec. 20 at the university's annual winter commencement exercises in Prather Coliseum.

Shamir Davis and Gary Roberson, who helped the Demon basketball team reach last season's NCAA Tournament, also graduated Friday. Davis was an All-Southland guard who won the Most Valuable Player honors at the Southland Conference Tournament. Former NBA player Trey Gilder, a 2008 All-Southland selection for the Demons, picked up his undergraduate degree Friday after completing courses online as he continued his professional career.

Seven of the student-athletes graduated with high honors, among 81 graduates overall with grade point averages of 3.50 or better ranking among the top 10 percent of the 822 students who graduated Friday after completing academic requirements in either the summer session or the fall semester at NSU.

Former football center John McLendon and former soccer player Tiffany Kawana-Waugh earned magna cum laude honors by finishing with grade point averages between 3.70 and 3.89 on a 4.0 scale.

Cheyenne DeLaGarza-Stills, the catcher on last spring's NCAA Tournament softball team who will return for her senior season next spring, was among five cum laude (3.50-3.69) athletic graduates. Also in that group was volleyball player Jessica Guttierrez, who helped the Lady Demon program to its two best seasons in school history in her final two years, including a spot in the conference tournament finals last month.

Former football offensive lineman Caleb Stanfield, soccer competitor Melodie Johnson and track and field athlete Shana Lee were also cum laude graduates.

Another member of last spring's Lady Demon softball team that reached the NCAA Tournament, pitcher Paige Cavallin, picked up her undergraduate degree.

Among the Demon football graduates were 2013 All-Southland selections Lesley Deamer and Warren Jones, all-time leading kickoff returner Phillip Harvey, and Louis Hollier, who finished second all-time in career receptions in NSU history.

All-Southland baseball standout Will Watson, who led the 2013 Demons in hitting, also graduated Friday.

Karllis Perry, a sprinter who earned All-Louisiana honors and ran on the 2011 4x100 meter relay unit that reached the NCAA Outdoor Championships, was among the track and field competitors graduating Friday.
