With the wins, the Lady Demons bounce back from a rough start last weekend and improve their record to 4-4 overall as the Devilettes drop to 1-7.
“These were good wins for us today, and we were able to get most of the team on the field,” said sixth-year head coach Donald Pickett. “Our performance this weekend will be good fuel heading into next week as we head to Arkansas and Tennessee-Chattanooga.”
Northwestern State did not waste any time getting on the board in both games today, putting up two runs in the first inning of each.
Micayla Sorosiak got things started in game two as she doubled up the middle with two outs and runners on first and second, sending both of them home for a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Demons tacked four more on in the fourth inning as Kellye Kincannon tripled with two runners on, and advanced home on a throwing error from left fielder Natalia Covarrubias. Jones stepped up and singled to left field and brought up Cali Burke, who doubled and advanced to third on a muffed throw, allowing Jones to score.
Brittany Virgoe gave NSU its seventh run in the sixth as she doubled to left center with two runners on. Brianna Rodriguez followed with a fly out to left field, but allowed Tara McKenney to score from third.
After serving a one game suspension on Friday for violating team rules, McKenney kicked off scoring in the first inning as she doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch and was driven in on a single to right field from Rodriguez. The Lady Demons loaded up the bases on a pair of walks, and later scored another run as Kincannon was also walked.
Jones gave NSU a huge lift in the fourth inning of game one as she stepped to the plate with just one out and runners on the corners to rock her first homer of her career beyond the NSU outfield club in left field. The Lady Demons picked up one more run that inning as fellow freshman Baylee Shepard notched a RBI single to right center.
NSU put up three more runs in the second inning when Cassandra Barefield sent a shot to singled to left field with the bases loaded, allowing McKenney to score. Sorosiak also singled, this time up the middle, but sent two runners across home plate.
Kincannon led from the plate with a two-for-three outing and four RBI, followed by Sorosiak (3-5, 4 RBI) and Jones (3-5, 3 RBI).
Kaylee Guidry (1-1) and Skylar Cagle (1-3) picked up their first wins of the season from the circle. Guidry threw four complete innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two. Shelby Alexander threw the fifth inning, striking out three.
Cagle and Baylee Gray noted three innings each in game two, striking out two and four batters, respectively. Gray did not allow any hits as Cagle gave up two.
The Lady Demons head to the University of Arkansas on Wednesday for a single game meeting with the Razorbacks at 6:00 before heading to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Frost Classic beginning on Friday with Butler at 1:30 and Tennessee-Chattanooga at 6:30. NSU returns home on Feb. 26 to host Southern in a pair of games.
