Title: Advisor/Instructor, Student Support Services
Education: Northwestern State University BS in Accounting 2000, M.Ed. Adult and Continuing Education 2005
Years at NSU: April 2001-present
Job Description: I work with students in a variety of capacities. I teach classes, provide academic advising, referrals to promote academic success and healthy lifestyles, staff advisor to Helping Hands, facilitate workshops and serve on various University committees. This position requires empathy, patience and consideration of others. It has humbled me a great deal and has created a new flame of energy to work towards educating as many students as possible through our program. TRIO, the federal outreach student services program that identifies and provides services for individuals with disadvantaged backgrounds, has been quite an eye opener for me. Many people have preconceived notions about what we do and who we serve. Our goal is to provide an experience that helps students persist each year, retain them at Northwestern, and graduate them within 4-6 years with their bachelor’s degree.
Why I like working at NSU: NSU was a nice place to attend college and became an even nicer place to work. I know many people on campus and enjoy the relationships established through working together. I collaborate with other offices on different activities and enjoy helping students through their educational journey. I believe that the little details are what makes life that much easier and pleasant. I enjoy helping students accomplish their goals and then have the privilege of seeing them off into the “Real World” on the day of graduation.
