Kaufman, Demons stay sharp during summer baseball

The 2014 Northwestern State baseball squad features 16 Demons that are playing in summer leagues across the country, including infielder Regan Kaufman who holds a .326 batting average through 16 games played this season.

Kaufman is playing for the Kansas Cannons in the Walter Johnson League, and has five doubles, two triples and a home run among his 14 hits this summer. He has knocked in 14 runs and scored seven.

Four other Demons are members of the Walter Johnson League, and all four are teammates. Austin Tanner, Fielding Matkins, Sam Wilson and Anthony Lucas are playing for the Park City Rangers. Tanner has no record and nine innings pitched with a 7.00 earned run average. Matkins holds a 1-0 record with one save this summer. He has pitched in 17.2 innings and has recorded a 0.51 ERA.

Lucas is hitting .273 in 13 games played, and Wilson .265 in 15 games. Lucas has two runs scored and eight runs driven in. Wilson has six runs scored and 17 runs driven in.

Reigning Southland Conference Freshman of the Year Adam Oller has no record in one game started. He worked five innings and allowed two earned runs for a 3.60 ERA. He is a teammate with Josh Morris for the Matsu Miners in the Alaska League. Morris has pitched in three games and allowed one run for a 2.75 ERA.

All-Louisiana vote Chase Daughdrill is playing for the Marshals in the Texas Collegiate League, and has a .261 batting average in 17 games played. He has 18 hits, 11 runs scored and 12 RBI. Joel Atkinson is playing for San Luis Obispo in the California Collegiate League and has a .200 batting average, three RBIs and two runs scored in seven games played.

Evan Tidwell and Matthew Alford are teammates in the Ohio Valley League with the Hoppers. Tidwell is 2-1 in the summer with a 2.96 ERA in 24.2 innings pitched. Alford is hitting .150 in six games with four runs knocked in and one run scored.

Reid Peavy and Nathan Aultman are members of the Thunderbay Border Cats in the Northwoods League. Peavy has pitched in four games and worked 4.2 innings. Aultman has pitched in four games and worked nine innings with a 3.00 ERA. Aultman has punched out seven batters and walked four.

The last set of teammates is Devin Bear and Kelsey Richard, who play for Mantauk in the Hamptons League. Bear has worked 20.2 innings in three games started with only four runs allowed for a 1.74 ERA. Richard has a .154 batting average and one home run, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Edward Ruggers has pitched in 12 innings and given up 10 runs for a 5.03 ERA for Galveston in the Karl Young League.
