Individual and team entries, and sponsorships, are being accepted for the Aug. 2, Don't Die Wondering Classic XXVI scramble golf tournament, which generates support for the Northwestern State Lady Demon basketball program that returned to the NCAA Tournament last March.

The event, staged each summer since 1989, will be played at the 18-hole Northwestern Hills golf course on the La. 1 bypass.

Co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr are carrying on the traditional event established by legendary retired Lady Demon head coach James Smith, who originated the DDW Classic, “a golf tournament unlike any other.”

The 2013-14 Lady Demons won the Southland Conference Tournament championship and reached the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 21-13 record in the Stoehrs’ second season. The program achieved at a high level in the classroom, with a cumulative grade point average over 3.0 for the academic year as five team members posted perfect 4.0 GPAs in the spring semester.

Funds raised through the tournament will be used to purchase conference tournament championship rings for the 2013-14 team, to supplement recruiting budgets and to assist with summer school funding that allows the student-athletes to make valuable progress toward graduation, said Brooke Stoehr.

“This season’s success would not have been possible without being able to have 10 players in summer school last year,” she said. “We have been able to achieve this success because of the tremendous support from our fans.”

Four-person teams may enter, with a $100 per player entry fee that covers greens and golf cart fees, a commemorative cap, lunch and entry in the Foy Motors Hole-in-One Shootout. Individual entries are also welcomed.

Tee times are 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., with food served on the course along with lunch in the dining room.

Any player who makes the first ace on the par-3, 168-yard 10th hole will win a 2014 vehicle from Foy Motors in Many.

Any ace made in the tournament will be rewarded with prizes ranging from golf equipment to trips to resort locations.

Merchandise prizes will be awarded to six different teams with competition in low gross and low net handicap divisions.

Closest to the hole contests will be held on all par 3s along with hole-in-one prizes.

Tournament sponsorships are also available for supporters. Packages offered are a corporate sponsorship for $1,000, a major sponsorship for $500, a team sponsorship at $400 and a tee sponsorship for $150.

To enter or for more information, call Brooke Stoehr at the Lady Demon basketball office at 318-357-5892, or David Stamey at 357-1262.
