Northwestern State soccer signee Alex Latham, who has trained with United States goalkeeper Tim Howard, was named as the Herald-Tribune Prep's Girls Soccer Player of the Year, the publication announced earlier this year.

The goalkeeper from Lakewood Ranch High School (Bradenton, Fla.) led her team to the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 4A Soccer Finals in back-to-back seasons. In 2014, the team finished 23-1-1 after it lost in the semifinals.

Latham put up 18 shutouts in LRHS's 23 wins, and had 63 saves to four goal this season.

"We are excited about Alex battling for a starting position in goal," said Lady Demon head coach George Van Linder. "We think our trio of goalkeepers coming to NSU will be some of the best in conference."

Latham had the opportunity to workout with the United State's goalkeeper for the 2014 World Cup, Tim Howard. Howard posted 16 saves, most since 1966, in the 2-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16.

"I've trained with Tim for the past two summers. He couldn't be here this year obviously but he made sure to send us messages throughout training," said Latham. "Learning from the best makes training all the more intense."

The Lady Demon soccer team reports on Aug. 5 for preseason training. Latham will be joined by 13 other newcomers that matchup with 12 returners.
