SHREVEPORT, LA
Dec. 21, 1936-Oct. 15, 2017
Nelda Anne Moore (nee Smothers) died peacefully surrounded by family at home Oct. 15, 2017 in Shreveport at the age of 80 years young.
Nelda is survived by her children, Marla G. Moore and Jamianne Moore of Shreveport; her daughter-in-law, Robin L Harris of Shreveport; and her canine companion, Lola.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Conlay and Robert Smothers of Campti; and her husband, USAF Lt. Col. Jimmy D. Moore of Shreveport.
Nelda was born Dec. 21, 1936 in Chestnut to Mary Conlay and Robert Smothers. She was an only child and the first in her family to graduate high school. She went on to complete trade school in bookkeeping to work in banking and later became a cosmetology instructor at Guy’s Beauty School in Shreveport. Nelda married Jimmy D. Moore, a graduate of Louisiana Tech University USAF ROTC program, in February 1956, and soon after, they embarked on a career in the U.S. Air Force. Over the next six years, Nelda and Jim welcomed two children into their home, and continued a 20-year journey to USAF installations across the country, including Texas, Alaska, Nevada and Florida, eventually retiring in Louisiana.
Her children remember her as a loving, warm, determined and fiercely protective mother, whose tenacious character and devotion to family sustained and grounded them with a sense of security and stability. Nelda was accomplished at cooking, needlework of all types, gardening and she never met a stranger. She was a generous individual who loved a good read and was passionate about providing her children the stable, loving family she was denied. And she did that successfully in times of both prosperity and crisis until the moment of her passing.
A memorial service is scheduled for 18:30 hours (6:30 p.m.) Wednesday, Oct. 25 at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church located at 9449 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, with a reception to follow. The Rev. Barbara Jarrell will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Nelda Moore’s life, and break bread in her honor. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to either:
