Cane River National Heritage Area, Inc. (CRNHA) will host Las Posadas: A Los Adaes Christmas Celebration Saturday, Dec. 16 at Los Adaes State Historic Site. Beginning at 11 a.m., the event will include holiday tastings of traditional Posadas dishes, children’s crafts and a traditional piñata.
“The tradition of the Posadas was brought to Mexico from Spain in the 1500’s by Catholic Missionaries,” said Michael Mumaugh, CRNHA Heritage Ranger. A holy history lesson: The Posadas commemorate Mary and Joseph’s difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a place for the Christ Child to be born.
Although this tradition originated in Spain, it has been a yearly celebration throughout Mexico and some parts of the former Spanish colonial empire for over 400 years. The tradition begins Dec. 16 and ends nine days later, on Dec. 24. Las Posadas commemorates the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy.
Visitors are invited to celebrate and discover the Christmas traditions of Los Adaes. Admission is free and the event will be from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Los Adaes State Historic Site is located just off Hwy 6 near Robeline at 6354 Highway 485.
