BATON ROUGE, La. – Possible criminal charges are pending following the death of a Louisiana State Penitentiary offender. West Feliciana Parish Deputies and Department of Corrections detectives are investigating the death of 41-year-old Gamarus Everett. Everett died Monday evening at a Baton Rouge hospital.
Everett was involved in a fight in his cell Friday evening with his cellmate, 36- year-old Jessie Grace. Correctional officers making routine rounds discovered the fight and ordered Grace off of Everett. Everett was unresponsive, and correctional officers immediately began CPR and revived him. Everett was transported to the prison’s treatment center, where a Department doctor diagnosed him with life-threatening injuries, and immediately transferred him to a Baton Rouge hospital.
Everett was serving a life sentence for second degree murder out of Bossier Parish. He has been at Angola since March 11, 2002. Grace is serving a life sentence for second degree murder out of Jefferson Parish. He has been at Angola since March 4, 1994.
An autopsy will be performed this week. Possible criminal charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and the autopsy. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further details are available at this time.
