Mazda Motor Corporation awarded STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) grant to Northwestern State University’s Department of Fine + Graphic Art. The company plan utilizes the Mazda RX-8 as a venue to showcase art, design and alternative fuel and propulsion systems as developed by faculty and students. “Integration of disciplines i.e. science, technology, engineering, art and math is a key component of what is essentially an extension of my art car research projects,” said Collier Hyams, professor of art, who wrote the grant and has worked with students in interior and exterior design. Hyams’ students have designed exterior skins with paint and vinyl printed wraps that were applied to Mazda vehicles and displayed at the Washington, D.C., Auto Show.
