Dear Editor:
When a shooting occurs, the gun control activist and leftist media start advocating restrictions on gun ownership. They do not try to analyze or seek solutions to the problem but start pointing fingers, usually at the NRA. They don’t realize that four times as many people are killed by knives.
Law enforcement officials including Spokane County Sheriff Ossie Knezovic blame a moral digression in society that makes such actions possible. Knezovic makes it clear the shootings represents a societal problem, not a gun problem. Darrell Scott, father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School Shootings in Littleton, Colorado in testimony before the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee said, “What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine’s tragedy occurs – politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA.”
Many say the lack of parenting contribute to a lot of our violence. Many kids grow up with lack of discipline and don’t know how to accept responsibility.Kelly Guthrie Raley a Florida teacher of the year says parents need to “step up” and control their kids’ behavior i.e. teach them right and wrong.
Today, society needs to return to teaching Biblical principle to their children. Only by this will we ever emancipate ourselves from the morass of anarchy that we are surely sliding into, little by little. It will take concerted effort by the Church, the school and the home to rectify the massive problems we face.
In a “Dear Abby” column she asked her readers what they thought were the main problems in society today.
In a nutshell, these were the responses she received.
•Lack of personal responsibility
•Greed. A “What’s in it for me”
• Intolerance
•Apathy
• Breakdown of the family
• Personal isolation
•No respect, no discipline, no courtesy and no consideration of others. In the meantime, we must work at controlling the current crisis. Texas Governor Greg Abbott took immediate action in meeting the school shooting crisis after the recent Santa Fe, Texas school shooting. Governor Abbott formed a group to come up with a plan to meet the current needs for school safety.
The plan called for arming more teachers, mental heath spending and “hardening campuses with extra police or metal detectors.” Also mentioned, keeping guns away from people deemed a danger to themselves or others. We must return to Biblical principles to combat the evil in society.
