Just before 10 p.m. July 18, Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a one-vehicle crash on Pero Church Road, one-half mile north of Nursery Road in Webster Parish.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by Alvis Cyrus III, 39 of Haughton was fleeing from a Webster Parish Deputy for a traffic violation. The Webster Parish Deputy lost sight of the motorcycle and called off the pursuit when Cyrus turned off the motorcycle’s headlight. A short time later, a concerned citizen reported a possible crash. The scene was located and evidence showed that Cyrus failed to negotiate a right hand curve and ran off the left side of the road hitting several trees.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Webster Parish Coroner’s Office. He was wearing a DOT approved helmet at the time of the crash.
Speed, impairment and failure to use a headlight are suspected factors. A toxicology sample was taken from Cyrus and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Making smart choices when driving can often be the difference between life and death. Louisiana law requires all drivers to pull safely to the shoulder of the road when a police officer is behind your vehicle with emergency lights activated.
In 2018, Troop G has investigated 10 fatal crashes resulting in 10 deaths.
