NCHS cadets conduct summer workshop

By Cadet Cap. Emily Nobles, Public Affairs Officer

In preparation for the 2018-19 school year, 56 cadets from the Natchitoches Central High School JROTC program conducted a staff and leadership workshop July 30 through Aug. 3 at the NCHS campus. The cadets participating included the new cadet command group, staff and company commanders as well as the cadet NCO leadership consisting of the first sergeants, platoon sergeants and squad leaders. The cadets learned about their duties and responsibilities for their positions. Junior leaders who were cadet privates last year received leadership instruction and practiced leading each other in preparation for squad leader evaluations.

Cadet Wendell Calhoun said, “Last year we followed drill commands, this year we have to give the commands, learn the drill sequence and be able to teach it to the new privates.” The cadet battalion commander, Cadet Lt. Col. Aaliyah Edmonson, shared with the cadets her vision and goals for the Chiefs Battalion as well as her expectations for all the staff and leaders. JROTC is a cadet led program with the mission of “Motivating cadets to be better citizens.” The cadets enjoyed rappelling down the 40 foot tower.

Eager cadets rappelled multiple times to get their five rappels to earn their Rappel Arc. The Louisiana National Guard Recruiters provided the inflatable obstacle course and video gaming trailer. The cadets divided into two teams and raced the obstacle course with the new squad leaders winning over the senior cadets.

The staff continued their training on how to prepare operations orders (OPORD) which is a directive issued by the commander to subordinate leaders to effect the coordinated execution of a specific operation or event. Additional training included conducting command and staff meetings, preparing training schedules and completing the battalion events calendar for the school year.

Many thanks to Ginny Waskom and her crew at Dickey’s Barbeque Pit for the great lunches of barbeque sandwich meals the cadets thoroughly enjoyed each day. C/LTC Edmonson was very pleased with the workshop and shared with the cadets her appreciation for all their hard work and said, “This is going to be a great year because of each and every one of you!”
