Lifesaving classes to be held Sept. 15

The Office of Electronic and Continuing Education at Northwestern State University is two lifesaving classes on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Room 118 of Fournet Hall. The fee is $10 plus a $5 material fee paid directly to the instructor at the start of class.

The course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult hands-only CPR, adult CPR with breaths, child CPR with breaths, adult and child AED use, infant CPR and mild and severe airway block for adults, children, and infants. Skills are taught in a dynamic group environment using the American Heart Association (AHA) research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible.

Family & Friends CPR is for people who want to learn CPR but do not need a CPR course completion card to meet a job requirement. This course is ideal for community groups, new parents, grandparents, babysitters and others interested in learning how to save a life. A certificate of participation will be provided at the end of the course.

A Basic Life Support class will be taught on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 120 of Fournet Hall. The fee is $30 plus a $15 material fee paid directly to the instructor at the start of class.

This course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and pre-hospital settings.

The course covers new science and education from the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC; the components of high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants; the AHA Chain of Survival for pre-hospital and in-facility providers; important early use of an AED; effective ventilations using a barrier device; importance of teams in multirescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants.
