NATCHITOCHES – Sabrina Thiels is the second Northwestern State University student in as many years to be awarded a Rockefeller State Wildlife Scholarship for students pursuing degrees in forestry, wildlife or marine science. Thiels, a junior from Alexandria, is majoring in biology with a concentration in natural science.
The Rockefeller State Wildlife Scholarship is a competitive scholarship that awards $2,000 annually to an undergraduate student and $3,000 annually to a graduate student. Applicants must be a Louisiana resident, enrolled full-time at a public college or university and must have earned at least 60 hours college credit and have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average for undergraduates and 3.0 grade point average for graduate students.
“What fascinates me about the natural sciences is the unknown, especially in marine life,” Thiels said. “I volunteer at the Natchitoches Fish Hatchery several times a week testing water quality, helping with the fish and doing mussel work on a government funded project.”
After graduation, she plans to attend grad school and earn a master’s degree in aquatic resources or a related field.
