Dear Editor:

A 501 (c)(3), a non-profit corporation, is being formed for the purpose of improving the health of all Natchitoches residents. A major part of this new corporation’s activities will be to plan an indoor pool, including the fund raising, design, construction and operation. The approval of the 501 (c)(3) by will hopefully take place within the next three months. Once the corporation is formed, a 15 member Board of Directors will be formed. First notice is now given that candidates for the new Board are being sought. A Board member should have a strong passion for the improvement of community health; a desire and ability to fund raise; and a willingness to serve on the Board for 2, 3, 4 years or longer.

J.W. Scarbrough and I visited two wonderful indoor facilities in October. The new YMCA in Shreveport, and the indoor facility at Louisiana Tech provide two examples of outstanding design that can provide exercise to many different groups in Natchitoches, including both swimmers and non–swimmers. We will provide information on our pool visits to members at the next meeting.

Speaking of membership, I will call a meeting no earlier than the week after Christmas to have the membership read and approve the by-laws of the corporation, and to select board members. Once the Board is selected, the President of the Board will assume the role of leadership of the organization.

Please encourage those who were not at the July meeting, but who are interested in swimming, to join us at our next meeting and become members of the corporation, And feel free to call me or write if you have any questions.

Best Wishes for the Holiday season, and may God bless us all.

Sincerely, Don Barker (318) 357-1590
